I purchased a used 25 foot boat and the bottom paint is chalky. Its not peeling or blistered. I think i should repaint. Is it okay to paint right over the chalky paint. Or how do I go bout getting rid of the chaukyness before painting.
thanks
downeastmaine

I don't know if it was the 'right' way to do it (if there is such a way) I painted over chalky bottom paint on my whaler and it seems ok and looks nice.

Don't do it untill you get imput from people smarter then myseff ;)

If you have a West Marine store close get a catalog.
There is a great deal of info in ther on bottom paint.

Much more than we can type in here.

If you don't have a West store you can order an catalog on line from this link

http://www.westmarine.com/

BTW If it's chalky it's no longer effective.
Today's Anti-Fouling bottom paints are made to leach out the biocides to be effective once they are gone your protection is gone.

ya i just fixed up the rotted transom on my 16 foot starcraft american and the sides were also chalky... i thought bottom paint was pretty expensive but if ur boat is newer and it is worth painting then do it.. if not then just buy a good wax and buff out.. thats what i did and it looks pretty good

Some bottom paints are designed to be chalky. The paint slowly wears off when you use the boat. This is how it prevents growth and buildup. If you would rather use a different type of bottom paint I would remove all the old stuff.

Thanks for your reply's. I guess I'll pressure wash and use one of those course plastic scooring pad. Then reapply fresh bottom paint. I know i don't want to sand down to gelcoat..

Downeastmaine
