Bottom paint question?

I have a 20 ft DC on a trailer. I had a guy scrape the bottom paint/fouling paint that was flaking and rubbing off last year when i bought it. Now there is what appears to be a "no sand primer" on top of the gel coat. I am not keeping the boat in a slip but will be trailering to and from mostly salt water. A.) Can i use it as is without hurting the boat? B.) Is there anything that will take that primer off without hurting the gel coat underneath? I'd like to get it back to as close to original look as possible without bottom paint. Can i get the primer off and re-gel coat somehow? Any suggestions??

Thanks in advance!
Brent

Re: Bottom paint question?

A. it wont hurt anything
B.is much harder :)

I dont know whats there BUT you can try some fiberglass safe stripper in a SMALL area and see what happens

After the striper it does its thing you can try some LIGHT sanding and see if it can be polished to look good

YOU dont want to go through the gel coat

tommays

Re: Bottom paint question?

Tommays,
Thanks. Can i reapply primer over the existing primer and just paint over again? Or would i have to lightly sand the existing primer and then paint over.

It sounds like too much of a headache to try to gel coat the whole thing again.

Thanks!

Re: Bottom paint question?

ALWAYS lightly sand before putting another coat of anything on. You need to make sure the surface is porous and very very very very clean before you put the next coat of primer on.
