What is the best method for removing anti-fouling paint from my boat bottom? There appears to be several layers of build-up. Chem. strippers vs. sanding. What is the most agressive means of sanding I can use without damaging the gelcoat?
The best method to strip the paint is by using one of the gel strippers specifically made for the job. The gel is designed to stick to the hull, rather than dripping off like the liquid type will. After the gel is applied a mask is laid over the gel to keep it from drying out while it is working. When everything has softened up the paint is removed by scraping. A reapplication or light sanding may be required in stubborn areas.

Try this link to some products available at boatfix: http://www.boatfix.com/catalog/722.pdf

As to sanding it off and possibly damaging the gelcoat, the gelcoat would have been sanded with 80 - 100 grit paper, scratching it for a mechanical bond before the bottom was painted.
