Ok I know this topic has been discussed before I did a search and did not find exactly what I am looking for so hence the post..

I have a boat with Bottom paint.. I trailer it and it never stays in the water.. I want to replace or get rid of the bottom paint... From what I have read I have to keep it painted or redo the gelcoat... I am not going to redo the Gel. So, I want to repaint it... I dont really need a bottom paint, what kind of paint can I use to paint it. Should I try to get rid of the bottom paint on there now or paint over it? I dont have a lot of experience with Painting so consider me a newbie whats the easiest and best result way to do this and what should I use???

Thanks

Tallman

Tallman, you can strip all the old bottom paint sand and prep the gelcoat :( and apply an enamel paint(cheap) or you can apply an 2part linearpolyurathane(LPU) that you obtain from any boat store or paint supply house. :) The LPU comes in a sprayed form or a brushed form. I prefer to roll the LPU on and have a second person follow with a portioned foam roller pad to smooth out the LPU. :p So far my two job have come out great. Dries to a hard finish and comes in many colors just follow direction!!! :)

Shawn

http://www.peelaway.com/html/peelaway.htm#marine1

link here....This product can remove multiple layers of bottom paint without damage to the gelcoat. Some staining after removal may still be evident as with other paste type removers. Also see "marine application" link there. This is a great system. :)

tallman,

The bottom had to be roughed up to accept the paint. It won't look correct without some type of paint.

that's if they did it correctly, right? i would remove the paint and see what you have. i think the question your asking is if the now bare fiberglass could be in any way harmed? i wouldn't think so, but maybe someone can verify.

another idea- i'm getting ready to use a new product from dolphinite- clear bottom paint. although it costs a ton -$220/gal - it may be the way to go. supposedly is super clear, high gloss, and improves speed and fuel efficiency.

good luck-
