Bottom Paint??? Where to start?

I have been on the water with PWC's for a few years now and I am not new to driving a boat... I am however a new owner. I just picked up and 1992 Bayliner Classic 2252... It has an unknown storied history and I am working to get in shape for using this summer.

I have been doing searches and reading all I can about bottom paint and there is so much info out there I am on info overload. So many options for procedures products etc.

The boat has been bottom painted before unknown how long or who did it but the bottom paint is pealing and flaking now so It needs work...

Where do I start... What are the best / easiest to us products out there? Any help would be appreciated.

The existing bottom paint must be sound, or made sound with some sanding, or it needs to be removed, prior to repainting. The best way to remove it (IMHO) is to use a marine paint stripper and a putty knife. Alternatively, you can have it sand blasted with a soft media.

After you have removed the old paint, you might apply a epoxy barrier coating to protect from water infiltration. Next is the bottom paint. I like to use an ablative paint, since I can get two or three years out of a paint job, with touch ups on the sides and transom, each spring.

B) How do I know if it's sound or not? I would assume its not b/c it is peeling in places...

C) Would baking soda blasting work I have one of those baking soda blasters...

Anyone got tutorials, or brands / products / systems they reccomend? How about the best place to buy this stuff? I am completely new at this bottom paint stuff. So any and all help would be great... thanks for the helps so far...

Anyone with advice on this? I have been reading all I can and my head is just spinning from all the information.

Right now I can't afford to keep the boat in the water all season... And from what I am reading bottom paint doesn't do well with being put in and out of the water on a regular basis... Should I just remove the bottom paint and ??? What is my best option?

If you use an ablative paint, you may haul and relaunch as much as you want and the paint will perform for multiple seasons. Just follow the steps in my previous post.

Store brand bottom paint is usually made by Pettit or Interlux, but is 25% or so cheaper. Choose by copper content. More is better. Anti-slime additives are relatively new. My experience is that regular (non anti slime) paint works fine, so I won't pay extra for it.

I use West Marine CPP. You will need to buy a gallon to do two coats. You will have a qt or so left over for next year's touch up. You need different AF paint for the outdrive of an I/O

Do you have any idea what paint to use on the outdrive... I have read on here that guy are just using regular or industrial rustolem...

Outdrives are aluminum. They need antifouling paint for aluminum. Tri-Lux is one of these. It requires careful priming, but works pretty good. There are sparay cans of AF for outdrives. These are better than nothng, and are real easy to use. I prefer to brush on a coat of Tri-Lux. Cocentrate the paint on the areas above the antiventilation plate.
