I have a 17 ft Whaler with a T Top. It sits on a performance style float-on style trailer. I need some ideas on how I can lift the boat off the trailer just long enough to paint it.

Any Ideas??

Hi TD,

If you do a search, there's plenty of old threads on this one, with scores of sane and whacky ideas!

Just curious - why are you painting it if you trailer it?

Why not a good floor jack and some 2x4's over the cup of the jack to protect (and distribute the load) on the hull?

Re: Bottom Paint

Stillfishing,
This boat is one of the original 17' Mauntauk Whalers from the early 70's. I have completey refurbished the old girl, and I recently added a brand new float-on style trailer with large bunks. When I purchased the boat a couple of years ago, the bottom was painted with a very good quality black bottom paint. As you might know, the flats in Florida are not always the kindest on boat bottoms. I just wanted to freshen it up a little.

Sounds like a great boat, and a rewarding project.

You can build a cradle for the stern out of wood, then with a floor jack walk the trailer out from under, & resupport the bow with a jack-stand with old carpet to protect the boat. Now you have a full view of the bottom to sand & paint. Or if you know someone who has a set of boat stands to lend you, they work great. Good luck, Joe
