Re: Bottom Painting

Personally, I'd sand if only just to knock off some of the old paint and smooth the bottom out a little...

Best paint to use? I dunno... Whatever paint you do choose, make sure it's compatible with the exsisting bottom paint.....

Re: Bottom Painting

I got the boat last Aug. . The bottom was already coated. I don't know what with. Is there a reason the paint has to be compatible?
Thanks , Dead Eye

Re: Bottom Painting

Some paints like vinyl bottom paint will cause the old non-vinyl paint to peel.. Fortunately vinyl paint has pretty much gone the way of the dinosaur...

Some bottom paints contain teflon, so if the old paint was a teflon type paint then you may have problems with the new paint not sticking too well..

If it were me, i'd strip whatever is on there, then put on an epoxy barrier coat like interprotect or pettit protect, then paint with an ablative bottom paint..
