I am contem  plating on painting the bottom of my boat with an epoxy paint, all the posts I've read so far say to sand the bottom first with 60 grit. Why is this so?, why can't I just paint right over the gel coat?

John,

Simple. If you don't sand it, the first time you launch, the paint will be on the bottom of the lake.

Re: Bottom Painting

Sanding creates little hills and valleys in the surface, which increases the surface area and gives the paint a surface it can hold onto. It is the same reason that a tire slides on ice, but sticks to dry asphalt. If you do not sand, that paint will peal off in large chunks as soon as you get on plane....
