Hello Everyone,

This is my first venture into boat restoration. I bought a cottage lot in Canada and was pleasantly surprised by the inclusion coronet explorer 21. The boat is't in perfect condition but I think I should be able to work with it and welcome your suggestion on how to get it back up and running! A little bit about my skill set is that I have done fiberglass work before and I'm a chemical engineering student confident enough to work with resin etc. I have also competed in robotics competitions and I'm comfortable with electrical systems.

So here is the project. I've got a ~1974 Explorer 21 with a 1976 buick 231 marine engine with unfortunately hasn't been winterized for the 6 years it has been left outside under a boat shelter. I'm not sure what the drive is.

The interior cabin is is pretty good shape. I'm going to replace the liners and order so new cushions and it should look presentable once again. The old water and gas tanks are in place. The gas tank is stainless steel and solid, reflective of the great danish construction.

The galley looks fine, the head is a direct discharge so I'm just going to leave it as in and not use it.

Electrical is where things start to go bad. It was attempted to switch the steerting from left to right and most of the cables have been disconnected.

The flooring has also been removed and I think is a manageable place to start for the restoration. Below the rubrail of the boat construction is all fiberglass so there is no rotting to be concerned about. I'm not sure in this case of the flooring I install above the deck has to be completely watertight or if boars/planks would be fine.

For the engine, I not sure I i should immediately drain the oil through the dipstick port and fill it with antifreeze or at this point it doesn't matter because it's been outside for 6 years.

Thanks so much for your insights, I've included some pictures.

Not an expert at that boat but it looks like a really cool boat you will end up with after restoring. It's hard to explain the satisfaction of doing one of these builds after you've actually finished it and "closed the deal" as they say. If you start, don't stop. That looks like it will be a fun vessel. The spar varnish pieces will look great after a few coats of varnish. You can build them up to 10 or 12 coats and they will look great!

The engine oil drain might have a hose attached where the normal drain plug would be if it were an automotive engine. Look at the stuff that comes out right at first. If you use a suction pump, run the pump for a few seconds and see if it's water. Also, look at the fill port for mayonnaise like stuff which suggests water mixing with oil. If you get water when you drain the oil, and yet you don't have mayonnaise at the fill port or in the valve covers, you might be okay to change the oil and filter and make sure the coolant is up and in good condition and then rotate the engine by hand with a ratchet wrench or whatever. If it turns over two complete revolutions, you are free to crank it with the starter. The idea is that you want to make sure that all cylinders are free of water when you crank it over with the starter. If you don't make sure you can turn it over by hand, you might bend a connecting rod with the starter if one of the cylinders has water in it. You can also crank it over by hand with all spark plugs removed to free it of water. Then you can crank it with the starter.

Others will have suggestions for your restoration. I sure hope it's free from rot!

Thanks for the advice Sea Stomper, it is helpful and much appreciated. I'll definitely check the oil the next time I'm up.

A general question for the forum - what's usually the best place to start a restoration. My thoughts are the cabin but the deck delamination might be the most pressing issue.

I think my goal might be to end up with a boat like this and just ditch the inboard.
