Here in Pa, prior to about 1982 (I think) no boats were required to be titled. If your boat is older, certainly if from the 70s, you can register it and have it newly titled in your name at the local auto tag store

Jeesy, any luck on this?
I also bought a 14" old BassPro, 350 bucks, couldn't pass up the deal. Boat, motor (35hp) and trailer.

I called the DNR (Maryland) and they asked if it had registration numbers, I told them that I think it does.
I was told that I would have to find the owner.
I then asked what to do if it did not have numbers (which it does), it would then mean it was never registered.

So I was thinking of maybe taking that approach?

I also learned that if a boat has no motor (which it does) that it would not need to be registered.

So maybe I could take that approach? Pretend it does not have numbers or motor, register it, because I want to put a motor on it?

Does anyone have any ideas?

You will need to complete the application for registration and have a bill of sale. Go to DNR, get in line and wait, and wait.....

I did the same thing, only it was a 12' jon boat. There is NO WAY to title it in MD., unless the previous owner signs it over to you. They will give you the name of the owner, but that's all. YOU have to find them. A Bill of sale means nothing unless it's the regestered owner. I can write you a bill of sale for anything. It means NOTHING to DNR.
I lucked out, my boat hasn't seen a sticker since 1977. I got the owner's name from DNR office, use the numbers on the boat for this. I googled, and found a phone number for the woman.. she is now 92. She signed it over, and all went well. If she had moved, or died, I could never EVER get a title for that boat. But it's all good, if you want to row it. Just engine power requires stickers. It was lost and reported stolen 30 years ago. It actually drifted downstream 300 yards, and someone threw it on top of a shed, and it stayed there through 2 tenants of the house. The guy who lived there thought the other guy left it.
Someone at the DNR office said if you put an ad in the paper for a certain amount of time stating you found it abandoned, if no one claims it they can issue you new ownership papers. But I don't believe that so much.
It would have been easier and less painful for me to file the VIN off a new BMW and re-title it than it was to get stickers for that crappy little boat.
I will not buy a tricycle in Maryland unless I get a title with it.

Story after story...

I don't understand why people don't check with their state licensing authority before they pay money for something. If you know your state requires a title, and the seller doesn't have one, and won't get one before turning the boat over to you, shouldn't something about that scenario make you stop and say, 'hmmmm... this might be a problem.' ??

I don't get it.

But good luck anyway. :)

Check with your local state licensing authority before you even look for a boat. If the boat you're considering doesn't meet the requirements...there's another one down the street. Why buy trouble?

I bought a ski without registration one time. I bought it because it was cheap and I could sell the parts for more than I paid for it. I decided to try to get a registration card anyway so that I could use or sell the hull. I called Delaware's DNREC and told them the story. Of course they said they couldn't do anything but I persisted. I basically said if you don't give me a title I'm going to file for an abandoned vessel. I also told them that I tried to contact the last owner with no avail. Eventually they said I could just write up a letter that says I tried to contact the last owner and couldn't, they sent me a registration. This was in Delaware, good luck.

just went through this in San Diego.. bought a 1995 Searay from a guy that lost the title. CA DMV requires a notarized Duplicate Title Form plus a Bill of Sale Form for the boat and the trailer.

Here in Michigan not all boats are titled. If the boat has no lien against it, then a title is not required. That said, if it has ever had a lien against it, then it is possible to cancel the title when the lien is released. I have bought two boats with cash, and the first thing I did was to cancel the title. The first one, the bank forgot to release the lien and the owner had also tried to cancel the lien when he bought it from the prior owner. Secretary of state had screwed up and not finished the paper work. He had to meet me at the Secretary of States office and get things cleared up.

That said, you did not buy a boat, you bought a lesson. Hopefully, you can turn that lesson into a boat.
