Bought a newer boat, took the older boat on one last(?) run yesterday

So I recently bought a '86 Rinker, which is still a pretty old boat but a youngster compared to my '71 Saf-T-Mate. Wanted something a little more suited to tubing with the kids. Wife tells me I need to sell the old boat now. I tell her, "but the old boat is set up for fishing- the new boat for tubing- it's like two different tools, like a hammer and a wrench". suprisingly, this argument didn't fly with her

So yesterday being the last day the old boat is insured, I took her out on one last run, went fishing with my 8 year old. No luck, but it was nice hanging out with him now that he's old enough to fish without getting bored and fidgety too quickly. Great day to be out on the water! Perfect weather and hardly anybody out on the lake yet. That old outboard runs like a top. With all the work I've done to the boat and motor the last couple seasons, I didn't need to do anything other than typical summerizing. Cranked right up on the first turn of the key! Ran her at WOT for a while to blow out the fogging oil, clocked her topping our briefly at 33 with my iphone gps, and she'll do 32 all day at wot. I know, that's not all that fast, but the old speedo always said 28-30 mph, and I had a feeling the old girl went a bit faster than that. Modern tech now confirms this.

So I got this newer boat I have a big list of maintenence stuff to do on before I hit the water with it, and my trusty older boat that's water ready, but has to go. Hope I'm not making a mistake!

I am very glad that I have kept my old whaler all of these years. I have had many other boats come and go, but I still have my first one.

Yeah tx1961whaler, you never forget your first one, do you? ;-)

I'm hoping to negotiate something with the wife to keep my first boat too. I'm trying to finesse it with the sweet little ol' wifey to get her on my side of thinking. Wish me luck, I'm gonna need it!

Man, if you've worked hard on it and you love it, don't get rid of it, you'll regret it. Is there any valid reason to get rid of it other than having 2 boats?

You've just got to convince her that you need to keep the old boat, AT LEAST until you get the new boat "ready". Confirm it by taking her out on the new boat, with a pre-conceived 'break down'. She'll be the one saying, "don't you DARE sell that boat yet". By the time she realizes what happened, she won't even remember you have two. This is why it's always good to have either a barn, large separate "work shed" type garage or off location parking;)

You need two boats
What if one breaks down.
Lots of people own two cars for that very reason. ;)

It's always sad to see an old friend go.

I have a 150 HP bass boat. Bought a 10 hp Bass tender last winter. Wife and I both love to fish, and we wanted poverty insurance. We could pull this thing to the river with the lawn mower and fish all day on about a gallon of gas, or maybe just with the electric trolling motor.

Haven't even thrown it on a trailer yet, but it's there if needed.

It's hard to let the olde girl go, I know. There is something to say about waiting till the new boat is tested and ready, but now is the time to sell her, not later. If you don't get what you think is a reasonable price, keep her.
