bought a used motor need help

I just bought a 2003 mercury 2 strok 15 hp. motor looks to be in amazing condition. not even a mark on the prop or lower unit.
I just drained the lower unit gear lube to change it. i pulled the vent and drain plug and only about 1 ounce or so of lube came out. it was a brown color.

the manual said it takes 6.8 ounces.

i refilled it until new lube came out the vent hole them put the plugs in.

behind the prop also has a little wear mark like fishing line or a leader line got caught.

should i be worried about it? would it of hurt anything being that low on lube if the previous owner ran it like that?


any help would be appreciated.

He probably emptied it while in storage as you should.If no water in oil and no metal on drain plug magnet (shavings ok) all should be good.

Jason. I hope you put New washers on the vent and drain plugs. Then I would run it in the water for an hour or so,then recheck lowerend lube. .02 OR you could do a pressure and vacuum check on the lower to make sure there will be No water intrusion. and seals
