I am looking to mount a Minn kot on the bow but unsure if it will work. I have an 1985 Glascon (CANADIAN BUILT) open bow. I know I will need a backer plate under the mount because of it being Fiberglass. Only issue I have is the spot I have to mount it is not even and would require shimming. I am wondering if anyone else has done a project like this or would have an idea of how I could make it work.

Shimming of one sort or another is generally needed on most installations and yours is not unique. You just need to think about the problem and don't drill any holes until you are 100% satisfied with the positioning. Make sure the motor is deployed when marking the position for the plate. Too far back and the shaft will hit the boat before the motor is vertical. You also want the motor mounted so the shaft follows the side of the boat when stowed rather than intruding into the passenger space. Whatever you use for shimming, make sure it is water proof. If using wood, you might consider encapsulating it in fiberglass and finishing it to match the boat color.

The above recommendations from Silvertip are spot on.

Also. understand that for any trolling motor to control your boat, it has to be securely mounted. Because the actual mounting hardware is the only thing that transfers the trolling motor thrust and direction to the boat. So like Silvertip stated, make absolutely sure you have it exactly where you want it before drilling mounting holes. JMHO
