We have a 42" box fan with a 14" pulley, but dont know what motor to buy for it.

What HP electric motor, what RPM motor, what type of motor (does it need a specail motor with starter capacitor), and what pulley size on motor?

Thanks, Ken

Re: Box fan motor size

When I was a kid my dad hooked up a fan to a 90hp v8 flathead ford and tried to cool the place down. The problem was that even tho the fan was on the porch blowin in the window, everything in the one room house was up against the wall in seconds. Ma wouldn't go for it, so back to the drawing board and a washing machine motor, one cylinder B/S did the job. Whenever laundryday came along he put it back. Chief ;)

Re: Box fan motor size

Just replaced the motor on mine, KIZ...

1/2 HP, 1700-1800 rpm, capacitor start... Capacitor start might not be 100% necessary, but it would be better... My old motor was'nt a cap start, but I replaced it with a cap start motor and now the lights don't dim nearly as bad on start-up..

I think you'll find that capacitor start motors in that size range are about equil in price compaired to non-cap start...

With the 14" pulley on the fans shaft, I'd guesstimate that a 3" pulley on the motor would be in the ballpark...
