What has happened to Heavyweight boxing. As a kid we always new who the champ was. Now there are so many belts and so many freaks fighting for them that most people don't even know who the Champ is. I think Boxing has taking a big turn for the worse many many years ago. Any thoughts

Lennox Lewis Boxing is more fake than pro wrestling thanks to Don King. I have to confess that I do get a kick out of Mike Tyson though. This guy should be in a cage somewhere, totally out of control.

Remember the Hagler/Leonard fight? I think that was the best fight I have ever seen. Two guys toe to toe, throwing bomb after bomb. Just don't see too many fights like that anymore.

I still love boxing. Hollyfield will always be my alltime favorite and as much as I despise Tyson he is a great boxer. Don King is who's ruining the sport IMHO.<br /><br />Its entertainment and like anything else, they get paid too much. And, more than likely the sport of boxing is just corrupt today as it was 50 years ago.<br /><br />But its still entertainment, and I will still watch.

Howard Cosell saying..."Down goes Frazier" The Ali-Frazier fights were good. Ali tainted the sport by only fighting once a year or so. Louis used to fight someone on the radio once a month. It was called the "bum of the month" Trained by fighting

we have a local boy, baby joe mesi who is NOT<br />promoted by King. the great white hope is ranked<br />#4 and is undefeated. king has done everything<br />in his power to keep him down since he wouldn't<br />let him promote him. his dad was his promoter<br />until recently sugar ray leonard took over.<br />hope he at least gets a shot at a title <br />right now his record is (28-0, 25 KOs) and will<br />be fighting VASSILIY JIROV march 13th om HBO who<br />is former cruiser weight champ with a 33-1 record<br />with 29 KO's.

I think good 'ol Tyson ruined the heavyweight division.<br /><br />.......and guageguy, that Hagler/Leonard fight was fixed! No way in he11 could Leonard have beaten Hagler! Hagler didn't even fight the way he always did in that fight, and it wasn't because of Leonard either. <br /><br />It was fixed I tell ya...........FIXED!!!!!!

I think Hagler won that fight too. He took that fight to Leonard. You could see the total dismay in Marvin's eyes when they said Leonard won, and even the shock in Sugar Ray's eyes...through the swelling of coarse

Hagler/Hearns was another of my favorites. Can you tell that I'm a little partial to Marvelous Marvin?<br /><br />Never saw any of those fights Xcusme.

My now-favorite is my home-town-boy, Buster Douglas, who beat Mike Tyson on my wife's birthday (Feb. 10).<br />We met Mr. Douglas when visiting the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. A nicer, more-quiet guy you'd never know. He gave my (then) 15-yr-old daughter an autograph which she turned over to me.<br />My favorite all-time boxing champ is Muhammed Ali.

The true Champs are out there.<br /><br />John Ruiz is my favorit heavyweaght, he also holds the WBA belt. He's from MA, my dad knew him was he was only 17, I've met him a hand full of times. <br /><br />John Ruiz never gets any respect, lets not forget that he beat Hollyfield two out of three fights, and we all know it was really three out of three.<br /><br />Lennox Lewis is out of the picture, he retired a few weeks ago, which was smart he looked like crap at his last fight.<br /><br />I don't regard Mike Tyson as a person. He's a dirtbag. I saw on TV that when he was a teen he would help old ladies cross the street and them beat them and rob them, real nice guy, huh?<br /><br />Mickey Ward is also one of my favorits, I see him a the New England golden gloves all the time. If didn't see his fights againts Gatie you should, thats what I call heart.<br /><br />Boxing is a great sport, I don't let people like Don King let you forget it.

Gents,<br />If you like boxing and want some real boxing and bang for the buck, go see your local Golden Glove tournemants.<br />You will see ten to twenty bouts for under ten dollars (at least, here.)<br />These kids only have three rounds to get it done and they are HUNGRY!!!<br /><br />I was the trainor for our team through the eightys and I know how hard these kids train just to put on a show.<br /><br />P.S. Brian FD,<br />At one time, I fought out of the Boys Club on Gift Street in the Bottoms.

Hey Xcusme - I have to agree with you. Gatti/Ward fights were awesome! Those are why we haven't totally given up on the sport. But we don't watch as much as we used to. Hubby's all-time favorite is still Duran. Now, he was a boxer!<br />Bassy

Well if you want to see a real slug fest, go watch a tough man contest.<br />They are there for one thing only. To knock the other person out, period.<br />It is non-stop from bell to bell.<br />They have them all the time here at home.<br /><br />They look like minature Butter Beans out there.<br />No jabs here folks.<br />Just be ol haymakers all the time.

I agree with LadyFish here.<br />Boxing, Wrestling and Startreck should all be listed as entertainment. Nothing to do with sports. <br />OK LF thats not exactly what you said but I'm putting my own spin on it <br />Here in WA state they can not even promote wrestling as a sport. It must be listed as a Exhibition and the word Sport can not be used.<br />The same should be done with Boxing.<br /><br />Boxing IMO should be pretty simple and straight forward.<br />When one person can no longer get up, or gives up, the match is over!<br />But thats not what I've seen on TV!<br /><br />Hollyfield-Foreman = Great people<br />Tyson-Ali-King should all be sharing a prison cell together. One for being a draft dodger and the other two for just being thugs.<br />Guess I'm not a great boxing fan EH?

I have lost a lot of interest in boxing, but I sometimes frequent a little Italian Restaruant here in Accra, Ghana. Just yesterday I was talking with the owner, Eddie something, and learned he was a 2 time Gold metal winner in the Commonwealth games - Light Welterweight - in 1962 and 1966. He took the Bronze metal in Tokyo in the 1964 Olympics. Had to leave Ghana in 1966 because of a Coupe-de-Ta (sp?). Ended up in Italy where he met his wife (she is a mean cook) and retired from Boxing after losing to a Canadian in a fight he really one, but too much discrimination against him, too much politics, too much fixing.<br /><br />Anyway, he was good friends with Cassius Clay during those years - said he was the same outside the public view, a real funny man. But terribly afraid of flying. It was definitely an interesting hour of conversation.
