does a tool exist that holds springs stretched out to install them?

Not to my knowledge,,,, but there is a tool called "brake spring pliers" that'll git the job done.

I use to use those pliers. You would hook one side and then pull the other to the catch. I did take a knack but it worked.

The brake spring pliers that I have has a semicircular notch on the end of one handle. The spring loop that fastens on the anchor post, is positioned on the handle and the notch on the end of the handle engauges the anchor post. The pliers is pivoted on the anchor such that the spring slides down the handle and over the anchor post. Sort of like using a shoe horn. A little lube on the handle helps.

Yep Gary, those are like one of the four different sets I have, they all have thier place.
