Brand new mercury idle problem

I bought a Mercury 2 strokes 50 HP some weeks ago (I use it in salty water). In the first 2 hours the engine ran perfectly then suddently it died at low speed. I first thought it could be lack of gas since this is a new engine and I didn't know the mileage but it wasn't. since then, the engine would die immediatly at idle and response to lever would take 5 to 7 seconds (reverse was only a teoretic concept). Last week, the merc mechanic spend 3 hours around the engine finding a fuel leak. Yesterday I noted that the engine, that runs much better now (low and high speed), has a rough idle.(I think one cylinder is misfiring). I also noted that he can't maintain idle for more than 2 minutes and when I shift fast from reverse or high speed to neutral it dies immediatly. The engine has 6 hours on it! Is it a question of fine tuning the idle rpm? Any suggestion?

PS- I don't know if I'm too strong, but my primer bulb never gets very hard... I suppose it was the fuel leak but now that part is fixed and it still doesn't seem hard...

Thank you very much for you answers ))

New Mercs are notorious for such shenanigans during break-in. I take it you are using the recommended 24:1 mix for the first tank of fuel.

Once she loosens up and gets on a 50:1 diet she will behave a lot better.

Good luck. :)

Re: Brand new mercury idle problem

My 2003 90 worked fine from the get-go. I have experienced no engine problems of any kind yet. I do agree with one post tho, the first time I throttle up for the day it sputters for a little before taking off. Then it is fine for the rest of the day.
Maybe you have an air leak somewhere. I would think your bulb should pump up pretty tight also. Mine does. If you have an external tank unplug your gas line and see if it pumps up then. With a built in tank I don't know. It should pump up just as tight connected to the motor I think.
My engine has about 10 hours on it now.

Tap the carbs with a screwdriver handle while you pump the bulb and see if they will firm up. Despite the fact that its new you could have a sticking open float valve since you have had all these problems.

JB, I have noticed that in the past you have made hegative comments about Mercury engines. I have owned 3 engines from Mercury and any time I had a problems they take care of it. Sounds like you have had a bad experince.

thank you very much for your tips... the mecanic was another 3 hours around the engine and finally solved the problems... engine works almost perfect now (sometimes he still stalls when changing fast from forward to reverse or vice versa) but i can live with that

thanks again

cheers, Tony
