My local marine shop wants $80 for a mercruiser coil for my 2.5L is that a good price or can I get one at a parts store for cheaper that will do the same? If so what would I ask for is there a specific brand or type that will work?

Thanks in advance.

Car coils are not typically interchangeable and tend to over heat -- Best to get marine one -- The best prices are often on line -- try Iboats parts search & compare

Is your coil really bad-- its unusual for them to fail

Thanks, I'm not sure what the issue is boat stalls after warmed up, running out of issues to fix. Coil points and rebuild the carb are the last things left.

coils are coils ,no difference some are oil filled some epoxy. The critical issue is points or electronic. a difference in the ohm`s rating
if points, the coil will be painted ":use external resistor" electronic ones need a full 12v at the coil,

Hmm I thought thunderbolts had a special coil for some reason -- good to know !

When it stalls does it restart right away ? If not have you been able to check for spark.

If you suspect an intermittant problem wire in a 12 panel light to the pos side of the coil
boat stalls, light is on then its not a wiring issue

Thanks, today I noticed I few sparks jumping off of the positive post not many but about 3 in a 10 min span I wiggled the center post wire to make sure the rubber was on properly and it was.

Could this be an indication of a bad coil?

Ayuh,..... More likely a sign of failin' components downstream of the coil,.....

The coil wire, distributor cap, rotor, plug wires, or the spark plugs,......

Electricity is lazy, it takes the path of least resistance to ground,.....
