I have a 1987 Sea Ray Pachanga 22 with a built carbureted 502 (1995 MY) and a Bravo 1 (1998 MY). I had it out for the first run of the season on Sunday. I put about 2.5hr total run time on it, mostly cruising between 2500-3krpm with two or 3 runs to WOT. On the way back to the dock it fell out of forward running about 2500rpm. It would not go back into forward, but reverse and neutral worked normally so I was able to reverse to the dock. I didn't spend any time trying to jimmy it into forward as I was in a river and didn't want to get swept away by the current. The drive was running on fresh oil - I checked the level at the upper vent both before and after running it. Clean oil weeped out both times. It is Merc/Quicksilver high performance gear lube, not an off brand.
What is the culprit here? I have heard bad shift cable/linkage, worn cone clutch, or broken forward gear. Thanks!
