"Gasket" that is........

Good afternoon fellow boaters.

I am in the process of installing a SS wear plate in my water pump housing. The directions say to use the permatex on the plate and attach to the cover. Would I also add permatex to the outer edges of the pump - like the black stuff that is on there now?
Here's the pic of my pump housing and the wear plate kit.

Your Gen 7 pump does not require any sealant IF a new O-ring is used. Your installing a SS wear plate and with the you will need to apply sealant between the wear plate and the original backing plate. Using some sealant on the O-ring is acceptable but may not be necessary.

I have the old style and have never replaced the O-ring and it doesn't leak, but I am also in fresh water. Why add the wear plate, are you seeing wear on the backing plate?

Because last year when I replaced the impeller, it took a while to prime the pump because it wasn't getting enough suction while on the muffs. I had no issue's all season last year once it was in the water.

I started doing some research and someone on iBoats had the same issue. The cover was worn down and it wasn't providing enough suction. He ended up purchasing a wear plate, which fixed the problem. I thought I'd try it as well. $50 vs. $400 was worth it to me.

I just asked the question because it looks like there is some sort of gasket sealant around the outer edges of the pump next to the O ring. I need to scrape that stuff off.

Since your planning on installing a new impeller and O-ring then there really should be no need for sealant by the O'ring.

The boat owners that have done the SS wear plate are happy they did.:)
