Hey all,

I bought a 1998 Monterey 242 cruiser last July. I'm converting the 5.0L 2v to a 4v carb/intake for a little more power. It did come with a bravo 3 sterndrive. Some people have told me that's a big upgrade (even though the motor is entry level). Can anyone tell me why its so good? I've been to the mercruiser site, but the blanket specs are not 'real world' if you know what i mean.

I'm fairly new to all this and am trying to understand a little better. Thanks in Advance!

Re: Bravo 3

Also, as it is a heavy cruiser, the extra blade surface, trim response benefits, and low speed thrust features of the twin propellers helps to get that heavy load on plane. It is very common to see 5.0s with B3s in "pocket cruisers". Most don't need/want the higher speed capability of higher rated engines, but do need that extra umph to get her going.

As compared to an Alpha and Bravo1, other benefits include: no directional propeller torque, excellent backing response, less low speed "wander" at displacement speeds, engine mounted raw water pump, better clutch mechanism (smoother and heavier duty).

I might expound slightly, the B3 is so much more effective in getting a heavy boat on plane, the low end torque it provides simply can't be matched by a single prop drive.

Just don't hit anything. You can buy an entire SEI Alpha replacement drive, brand new, for about the list price of a pair of Bravo 3 Props...

That's a nice boat you got there. Was on my short list when we were shopping.

That upgrade would also cost you over 10,000 bucks. Everything from the back of the engine back has to be changed. Transom shield and all.
Then you have to install an engine driven raw water pump since the Bravo doesn't have the pump in the drive.
