I am currently rebuilding a Bravo I outdrive because the old style shifter yoke wore out and would not shift. The drive serial number is OD799816 and and it is a 1.50 ratio drive. I replaced the gears with Gear Kit 43-883473A 4. The rolling torque is set at 7.5 inch pounds and the bearings were replace with new. My problem is when I install the pinion and tighten the ring nut the drive lockes up and will not spin. The bottom gear is tight and the top gear has some play. The old shims match the numbers stamped in the housing. None of the manuals I have shimming procedures. I have manual Number 90-17431 4 witch covers serial numbers b664190 and above. I also have manual #28.
If anyone has been in this situation and has any advice I would appreciate it.

I have Manual #11 But thanks for the link. No where in the drive dose it have shims. They have three different sized thrust races. Ive tried the one it says to use and the thinest one, also i've tried using the old thin thrust bearings with no luck i dont know what to do.

I dont know bravos but 3A-54 seems to say the bearings must be measured to see if there the same size as orginal and if different then shims would have to be changed

Yeah i did that!

The thrust bearings that came in the new kit are twice as thick as the old bearings. I cant use the old bearings because the inner diameter of the bearing is to big.

I tried the old bearings and it allows the gears to move but i cant leave them there it will cause them to fail because the bearing will move around.

Your going to have to look into the many internal changes that have gone into the alpha and bravo drives over there production run and see how this was handled as bearings twice the thickness are not going to work
