Bravo II drive

Hello guys;
I have a 1997 Mercruiser 5.7 LX Bravo II drive .
My question is ,the drive shifts very hard {have to pull on the shifter pretty hard }. The shifter and cables have been replaced
and there is no change. The mechanic at the marina says that Mercruiser has an up-dated cone clutch that would solve this problem. How can I find out about this?

The updated gearset doesn't help make the handle easier to pull. It just makes it "clunk" less when it goes into gear. You've still got a cable issue.

Was the shift cable from the engine to the drive replaced? Or just the cable that goes into the remote control?
They are two different cables.
