Hello i have a 88 baja sport 226 with 454 (330hp) and bravo one 615hrs on boat very clean boat and ran great all season and still going strong. A few weeks ago i did a oil change on my outdrive and noticed metal particles on the magnets and the oil was metallic looking at first when first starting to drain then just turned to dark burnt oil. Should i be concerned or go through it over winter? I am planning on pulling motor for winter to rebuild. Thanks for any help in advance.

I think it depends on how bad it is. A little bit of metal flakes wouldn't worry me. When you say burnt oil what do you mean?

Guess since this happened a few weeks ago there is little chance you let the lube sit over night pan, then drain the pan to see how much metal your seeing?

Suggest when you do drain it, let it sit over night or even longer. Then pour the bulk it into another container, turn flat again and look in the bottom of the original pan. If you see metal filings across the bottom of the pan, your looking at a problem

Thanks for replies. Wondering if its worth pulling apart over winter while i have motor out. I am pretty mechanically inclined i bought a bravo one service manual off ebay it dont look to bad to me other than all the special tools needed. Or i can just run it the way it is next year i dont know. Thank you.

Metalic oil - as you know - means that there are some metallic parts in the drive wearing excessively. If you have a winter project on your hands, I would take it apart and see what needs done now while you are at it. The last thing I would like to happen to me is to spend the winter working on the engine and spend the summer grounded because of a fallen apart drive.

Well i guess my next thread will be help with any questions or problems i run into with going through my drive over winter. I still have not winterized and was out on lake erie all weekend this weather we are having is unbelievable. Sunny and 60. No waves on the lake today either. Thanks.

I wouldn't take it apart unless you see trouble. That said, there not that hard to repair so long as you have some of the special tools. I rebuilt mine with about $700 in special tools, you might get by with less. I just needed to rebuild the lower half, the upper would cost more

The standard bravo 1 is rated at 400 HP but can handle more without issue. So long has you always ease into the throttle and don't drop it, and don't go airborne they will last a long time without issue. Your 226 is a light boat so raising the HP is also not so much an issue with the drive.

You can send a sample of the oil to Blackstone Labs and they will tell you if there are unusual amounts of metals in the oil and what metals they are; also how well the oil held up and it there was any trace of water in it.
