Bravo One Outdrive Shifter Issues

I was re-installing my Bravo One after putting the motor back in the boat. I got it stabbed, shifter cable was locked in correctly, but I was unable to engage the drive into forward without the motor running, but it would go in reverse.

Does the engine have to be running in order for the drive to engage in drive or does it matter?

I am not very familiar with these Bravo One's...any assistant would be great on how to install a Bravo One correctly and what to expect.

Thanks.

Sounds to me like the shift cable didn't make it into the latch on the drive when you put the outdrive back on.
Pull the drive back off about 2" and check the cable to see if it's in the latch.

What year is your Bravo?

Re: Bravo One Outdrive Shifter Issues

That showed me everything I already knew. I need to know if the outdrive is suppose to be able to shift into forward without the engine running?

I may have it stabbed correctly, but I would have thought I should have been able to shift into forward and reverse without the engine running...does anyone know whether this is true or not?

Thanks.

Its a '95 model hooked up to a 454. The cable was clamped into the shifter jaws.

The only way to shift a bravo correctly is to either have the engine running.;) Or have someone turn the prop carefully by hand while someone is shifting the shifter handle at the same time, Or you could do some damage if you shift it without spinning the drive over at the same time., Be careful while working around the prop.;)

Re: Bravo One Outdrive Shifter Issues

OK...I think that answered my question.

So, I should not BE ABLE to shift the drive in and out of gear using the shifter with the motor off.

I was concerned that I had stabbed this drive incorrectly because it would not shift into forward with the motor off.

I never got to putting water to the motor and starting it, but I will tomorrow after I get the drive stabbed again for the 4th time.

Thanks.

Re: Bravo One Outdrive Shifter Issues

I installed it today - fired the motor up and it shifted like it was suppose to. I guess these Bravo 1's work off of centrifugal force to engage into and out of gear.

That shaft must be moving in order for the outdrive to go into gear. Very interesting.

Thanks for everyones help.
