Just a few times last boating season I had problems with my bravo 3 not going into reverse. Shifter would just not go past neutral tward reverse but no problems going forward. Brand new shift cable, well 2 after I found out 1st was routed wrong. Taking the outdrive off the only obvious thing I can find is the detent pin is very sloppy in the hole on the back cap. Does anyone here know how loose that is supposed to be? Would this cause a hangup only in reverse every now and again? Thanks guys

The shift cable should move easy with motor running. With cable disconnected from the shift plate, you should be able to shift drive with your hands just by moving the cable.

If it shifts easy this way then check the throttle handle and cable to shift plate. If it doesn't move easy then its in the drive.

If its in the drive, ensure the cable end is latched correctly and the fork is not binding. Should be greased very well, more is better then less in this area. If this is all good, then remove shift mechanism and clutch shaft to inspect
