Break Away Trailer

I purchased a boat and trailer (first one) last year. Midway down the center of the trailer is a spring loaded handle. Looks like if you pull it the trailer will basically pivot. I'm not sure what the purpose is of this setup. Can anyone fill me in on this design?

Sounds like a tilt trailer - for easier loading and unloading
