What is the normal breakin procedure for a 60hp evinrude that has just been bored, new pistons, new rings and new bearings?

I know that double oiling is needed, but what else?

Hi Nathan,

Follow this:

1. Double oil. (25:1) for 10 hours or 12 gallons.

2. Do not exceed idle for first fifteen minutes.

3. Next hour. Do not exceed 3000. Do not plow along in the boat. Run it up to 3000 and quickly back off. Vary speed often.

4. Second hour. OK to plane boat. Vary speed often. Wideopen throttle allowed for VERY short bursts.

5. Third and consecutive hours. Vary sped offten and avoid prolonged running at WOT.

The absolute number one thing to do first is to figure out what caused the damage to the original powerhead. And correct that. You dont want a repeat performance.

Talk to your assembler/machinist. If he set it up tight, you will have to break it in very very slow and easy. That seems to be happening more and more these days especially as automotive machine shops get into outboard repair.

Good luck!

Don't forget the 25:1 mix for the first two tanks i know that's double the oil your motor calls for but a tight new motor needs the extra lube and try not to run wot very long avoid extream loads on the motor.

If your engine has oil injection mix the gas in the tank At 50:1
For best results use Evinrude or Mercury oil

On a slight variation of what DJ said

1. Double oil. (25:1)for 10 hours, 50:1 if using oil injection

2. operate at fast idle(1300) for first fifteen minutes.

3. Remainder of 1st hour. Do not plow along in the boat. Use full throttle to plane boat and reduce to about 3000 - 3500 keeping boat on plane. Vary speed often.

4. Second hour. Plane boat. bring boat up to 4000 - 4500 rpm, vary speed often. After 30 minutes Wideopen throttle allowed for short bursts(1 - 2 minutes then reduce speed to between 3500 - 4500 for 10 minutes.

5. Third and consecutive hours. Vary speed often and avoid prolonged running at WOT
