Well today finally got my 83 chris craft scorpion 210 5.7engine in the water. Complete engine rebuild. New stern drive. I had a couple issues and could use guidance.

1 tach not working. My buddy connected the ground to the hot lead by mistake. Would this blow out the tach? Reads pegged high all the time.

2. Smelled oil burning in engine compartment and there was an oil mist in there with fine spatter in the bilge.

3. Oil pressure started at 80 psi then went down to about 75 when running at higher speed..

What do I need to do next to make sure that these things are ok.?

Thanks!

Ask your buddy to buy you a new tachometer. Connecting the power to the ground post will most definitely destroy a tachometer, (and any other meter for that matter).

Smell of burning oil is not uncommon on a new build. Oil mist is not and needs to be investigated...

Sounds good to me. Minimum oil pressure at 2000rpm is 30 to 55psi.... (from the Merc Service Manual).

Re: Break in questions

Minimum oil pressure for most GM engines is 10# per 1000 rpm so minimum at 2000 would be 20 psi. However, that is a minimum and would tpically be in the range indicated in the previous post.
