My new boat has a 2002 90HP Mercury two-stroke. All of the manuals came with the boat, but none of the motor break-in information was included.

Until the dealer opens on Tuesday, does anyone have an owner's manual which specifies the correct way to break in this engine? I know that it has to have "double oil," but for how long?

Thank you,
Paul

Re: Break-in schedule for 90 Mercury

Engine is 50:1 oil injected. Need to run double oil. In other words, run 50:1 in your tank in addtion to the oil injection. This should be done for your entire tank as per manual.

Of course if you are running a 5 gallon tank and I'm running a 20 gallon tank, we will oil for a different period of time. I called Mercury and they said to double oil for about 15 gallons of fuel.

Don't ever run above WOT. Never more than a minute at a given RPM. Should vary by about 500 RPM during break in.

If you breakin properly, you will be rewarded with a long lasting engine.

Also during breakin, make sure that the oil level in the oil inejection is going down. If it is not, the oil injection is not working. Go back to the dealer immediately. This is as per the manual.

Hope you like this engine. It is very simple to work on and runs nicely. I will warn you the it does idle roughly (due to 3 cylinders) but once above 1500 rpm it runs very nicely.

Tx.

Joe
