Can somebody give me a run-down of how a breaker-less ignition works?

I have a '78 hp Mercury I'm trying to get going. The previous owner had it set up for controls, but the controls are crap and the main wiring harness is all cut up. I really don't care though, I want to convert it into a tiller anyway.

I got it to turn over and run by crossing the red and yellow wires in the main wiring harness(going to the controls). After it started, I broke the connection to stop the starter from cranking. It ran good for a while, but then in my infinite wisdom, I tried crossing the salmon(pink) wire with the red(power) wire. I worked alright. The engine shut off and won't start again. It cranks, but there is no fire. I think my dumb *** might have fried something, probably the switch box(cdi).

I'd be soooo glad if someone could help me out or point me in the right direction. Thanks

P.S. This is the wiring diagram I've been trying to work off from. Breaker-less ignition 66 on up

Re: breaker-less ignition

Shaffer, your right that is alt. driven CD ign. 12 volts will destroy the switch box at least. Get a service manual it's alot cheaper that those kind of parts---Bob

Okay, here's an image of a stator identical to mine.

The square orange thing in the lower left of the picture is the voltage rectifier.

The two small round looking things across from one another are the charging coils.(with white and yellow wires)

The windings on the right is the actual stator.

And the small black thing on the left is the trigger.

Is this all right?

------

I took the switch box off the motor and one of the wires behind it is really bad. The insulation is all hard and brittle and the wire is barely hanging on because it's so corroded. The bad part is, there isn't enough wire left sticking out of the box to solder a good one on to it. So it looks like I'm going to have to get a new switchbox, yuck!

I found one on ebay with the same part number for like $25.

Oh yeah, I've ordered the manual like you said.

Re: breaker-less ignition

The wires on most of the old boxs are going bad and it's about impossible to solder the up, $25 is a steal of a deal if it's good. The rest of the parts you have got figured out, so with a manual you will be good to go---Bob
