Just purchased new rebuild 150 Johnson outboard, Does anyone have first hand knowledge on how to break it in properly. I have been given a few pointers. I would like other opinions.

Re: Breaking in new rebuild

The actual proceedure is determined by what the machinist used for clearances. The person providing the warranty should be who you pay the most attention to.

That being said we don't have a lot to go on. What year is the motor? Oil injection? What was done in the rebuild? Were the heads cut? Block decked? Carbs rebuilt? Cooling system serviced? What's the toatal timing set at now? Did the rebuilder recommend resetting the timing after a few hours?

Most important of all - what did the machinist use for a finished bore size?

Dhadley,
This motor is a 150 hp 2001 johnson. The machinist said to add double portion of oil. Not to run over 2000rpm for 12 hrs use . I dont know what type of rebuild was performed . He claimed there was only two hrs on the motor since rebuild. I guess I need to ask him more questions. Also , I just completed the rigging and started it today for the first time. I let it run for about two or three minutes on the water hose .It kicked right off and idled smooth . The only thing I questioned was the temp. of the water coming from the pee hole. It seemed to be warmer than usual . That concerned me very much.

Re: Breaking in new rebuild

One of the main break in requirements for most manufacturers is not to hold it at one throttle setting for long. Meaning not for more than a couple minutes at a time at any given RPM. I would certainly question not running it over 2000 RPM's for 12 hours, since you would probably not be up on plane at that point, it would put alot of stress on the engine ...

Rickdb1boat,
you wwere right it took about 2500 rpm to get on plane and about 3000 rpm to stay on plane .
