Re: Briefly - what is a switch box?
The switchbox takes power from a separate set of coils in the stator, one set for each switchbox. It stores that power in capacitors, and fires a pulse to a spark coil which is timed by internal bias circuitry and signal from the trigger.
The charging circuit is a separate coil in the stator driving a rectifier, or rectifier/regulator, depending on the engine.
usually, when the engine runs good and it's not charging, it's the rectifier or regulator that is bad. In a switchbox engine, the tachometer signal is taken off the charging circuitry.
hope it helps
