Re: British Destroyer hits rock!

Perhaps a former USN sailer will remember the details but I remember the USS Enterprise (aircraft carrier) getting stuck on a sandbar years ago. I guess it happens to all the best.

Bob

I read somewhere that they left the plug out and were "speed draining" the boat before putting it back!

Re: British Destroyer hits rock!

I don't think that the Enterprise ever grounded, but I could be wrong. I know that the Roosevelt, (FDR) CV-42 ran aground about 1965 (+/- a couple of years). It was damaged to the point that I think it was only used as a training carrier after that.

In the US Navy if you run aground the Captain loses his job. It doesn't matter if he is on the bridge or not. Just a couple of weeks ago one of the Navy's Amphibous ships ran aground off the entrence to Morehead City NC. (They were either bring back a load of Marines or picking up some). The CO and XO were both relieved. They had to wait for high tide that night to float her off.

Heck I run aground, hit docks, etc. all the time, and nobody says anything to me. :D

WaterHog, The last time I was down your way, this past spring, I was going into Virginia Creek. I would have been better off getting out and walking.

Yes she's on the move again. There's three tugs towing her backwards to the mainland Aussie continent for repair. She snagged her anchor which caused some concern before the tow started. I believe it'll take some time at 4knts. The damage has prevented a forward tow. All is well, there's no loss of life, just embarrassment.
It just goes to show that none of us can take the water for granted. I'm forever indebted to my father for teaching me that no matter what happens, always show respect for the sea.
Ross

It's a pretty good size boo-boo, but I think you'd have to go a little farther to beat the Exxon Valdez.

i would not have believed that pic if it didn't come from RJ! its just unreal that there's a boat to pick up something like a warship... and for all you who understand- you see why a swamp doesn't bother me but the thought of the open sea gives me the willeez?

This is how they brought the USS Cole back from the Middle East after the hole got blown in the side. Seems like these ships are getting more of their share of business lately.

Re: British Destroyer hits rock!

About the USS Enterprise: It happened in San Francisco Bay around 1986-88. She was returning from a WESTPAC (Western Pacific deployment) and heading for home port in Alameda. All ships are brought into San Francisco Bay by a harbor pilot because of the narrow channels that deep-water vessels must use. The captain of the ship actually turns the helm over to the harbor pilot and he alone is responsible for safe harboring of the ship. In this case the "Big E" went slightly out of the channel and ran aground in the adjacent shallow water. Tough on the crew and their families waiting on the pier a couple miles away after a six-month separation. But the Enterprise's captain was not held responsble because he was not in command of the ship's passage at the time. In fact, I recall a few months later when the skipper was relieved, he was promoted to admiral. I'm retired Navy and was stationed in the Bay Area at the time. We found it very humorous except for the anguish of the families waiting to be reunited.

Heheheh...reminds me of '94 when I was on the Kitty Hawk doing work ups for WestPac...we were running games off the Baja and one of the subs picked us up...we made a high speed run south to try and shake them...the sub commander was doing good keeping up, until he skipped his boat off the top of an underwater mountain...OUCH...one reason you'd never get me on a boat that is supposed to sink.

The boat didn't stick around?!?!?!? Wow, if my boat was hit by a billion dollar sub I think I would sell it on ebay as a collectors item. Wait, if my boat was hit I would be at the bottom of the ocean...

Re: British Destroyer hits rock!

This is alleged to be the transcript of an actual radio conversation between a United States Navy vessel and Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in
October 1995.

Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision.

Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid
a collision.

Americans: This is the captain of a U. S. Navy ship. I say again, divert your course.

Canadians: NO. I say again, you divert your course.

Americans: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS LINCOLN, THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES' ATLANTIC FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE DESTROYERS, THREE CRUISERS AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES NORTH, THAT'S ONE FIVE DEGREES NORTH, OR COUNTER MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP.

Canadians: We are a lighthouse. Your call.

Re: British Destroyer hits rock!

Old Motor, that brings back a smile to my face. I have heard that story several different times with different US carrier names inserted.
While I was stationed in Holy Loch, Scotland, we had several incedences with subs coliding with fishing vessels as they came up the river. I believe once they even surfaced under another boat.
We also had 2 different Fast Attack subs come in to our drydock about a year apart in the dead of night, One had damage to the sail and one had a huge dent in the bow. I'd hate to think what they hit to do that.
