Exccellent purchase. Good sloggers those seagulls. I've got x5 of them at present. They just keep on going! Takes little maintanence, and a bit of effort but all well worth it. Still prefer my seagul to the 4hp Johnson on the dingy!!
Ross

G'day i find with my 40 plus that it occasional ydoesent start as the fuel filter is block as my tank has plenty of rust in it. also do you press the bleeder button on the crabie antil fuel pours out?

Johnny-take the plug out and clean it then put fresh fuel in the tank. At 10:1 mixture it goes "off" quite fast.

The best starting procedure for a seagull I've found is:-

Half throttle, close air intake, pump tickler til fuel comes out. Pull cord. They flood quite easily so if it doesnt start in 6 or 7 pulls turn the fuel tap off and keep trying. If this doesn't work take the plug out, dry it in a flame and pull it over a couple of times with the plug out. Then open the air intake and try again with the fuel tap turned on. Don't use more than 1/2 throttle when trying to start it.

If you're new to Seagulls then get a spare spark plug and a couple of spare drive springs. Carry them with you whenever you take it out. Both are an essential item.

By the way OMC, have a look on ebay UK for a brass tank from an earlier 40+to stop the rust problems. There's plenty of people breaking them for bits that'll post worldwide.

There is a site somewhere they discuss racing SeaGulls and going for speed.I saw one on what appeared to be a rowing shell.

Don't forget the old two stroke problem of fuel seperating. Give the old girl a bit of a shake before starting and that'll ensure the fuel is well mixed up. Otherwise all you get is an oiled up spark plug which belches out blue smoke till burnt off! The other fix is to use a fuel conditioner which prevents seperating, but I personally don't use it unless the engine's being stored for a while.
Ross
