Welcome to iBoats . . . :D

That's a neat trick . . . never heard a drive shaft actually breaking . . . usually the splines or the u-joint yokes give it up first. When you say 'drive coupler' I assume you mean the coupler that is attached to the engine flywheel?

Anyway . . . I assume the remains of the drive shaft has really wedged itself in the spines of the coupler when the shaft broke. Not sure if you can do much about it . . . is there any part of the drive shaft exposed from the coupler, or did it break off clean?

The only thing I can think of is if there was enough of the driveshaft exposed so you could get a vice grip on it and try to turn it in the direction the engine turns.

Got any pics to share?

you have to remove the drive, then the motor. if you have a jack shaft, you may be able to get the shaft and flywheel housing off, however do not count on it.

Welcome aboard.

To actually shear a input shaft take a lot of torque so dont be surprised if it comes out looking like this prop shaft

fatigue cracks can start if you have a dead cylinder and run the motor for a while. the un-ballanced loading is not as bad as cyclical reverse loading.
