Help - Reviving this thread. While winterizing, I broke off the brass adapter that threads into the engine block on port side of my 95 Mercruiser 4.3lx. It snapped flush off at the block. The attached picture shows exactly what I'm dealing with. Anyone have any success stories in how to remove this, considering limited space available for drilling. Suggestions, I'm desperate, but also dont want to mess up the threads on the block. Please help.

Pick up a easy-out to remove

Ayuh,...... Welcome Aboard,...... I agree with AD, get an easy-out,.....

No drillin' required,......

'n don't put 'em in so tight next time,...... Good, 'n snug, is good enough,.....

Thanks, do EZ outs really work? Any tricks to be aware of? Space is gonna be really tight.

Always interesting to easyout a brass fitting. The fitting is soft, so you want to be gentle and not just expand the fitting ever tighter into the block threads. At the same time you need the easyout in tight enough to bite. I mostly use the spiral type and would probably grab one good for 3/8"-1/2" range. I like the very coarse ones like the Hansen shown since they don't screw in so tight that they expand the brass too much to get the part out. Even then, I've had to drill out and use a 1/4 pipe tap to clean out a few that just wouldn't budge.

I've had good luck with these types of extractors:
