Good day all,<br />I got a brand new fish finder Garmin 240 blue from Boter's World. Two lowest pins broken off (on the unit itself). I tryed to exchange but they would not take it back because the transducer is installed on the boat already.<br />I was going to exchange just the display unit, but... <br />It still powers up but I am concerned with some function may become unavailable as the result.<br />Please suggest on your experience with the situation.<br /><br />Thank you.

Lenny, what's the tranducer on the boat got to do with it?If all you are doing is exchanging the unit there really should'nt be a problem. How long since you purchased and do you still have the receipt. If it's recent I would think you might want to try again.

It is recent, but since the trancducer and the actual fish finder go as a package, it is now incomplete. I am a little concerned as I can't find the receipt either.

If it's pretty recent, there's no reason they should not be able to pull your original order up on their computer and see when you purchased it and afford you some satisfaction. Not a good way to get repeat business. If nessesary, pull the tranducer and send them the whole nine yards if they agree to an exchange. They will not lose out. They will just send it back to Garmin anyway and be refunded their loss.

Thanks for your suggestion Rick.<br />The only problem with the transducer is - I would have to pull the boat out of the water, take it off and then put the boat back in. This would cost more then a new fish finder. There is no trailer for the boat, it is docked at the marina. I am not too happy with the whole thing and will dispute through my credit card. <br />I still need to know if in the worse case scenario I am unable to replace it, whould it work or is it unpredictable?<br /><br />Thanks.<br />Lenny

Deal directly with Garmin then. You should have their address in the instruction book somewhere, may have to do without it for a few weeks though. Or, you could send it out in the off season if you're getting good readings now. Good Luck!

This is funny.<br />I spoke to Garmin service, called my credit card, also called Boater's World generalized cust service. I left my phone number and was advised that someone will call me. <br /><br />Garmin offered to fix, credit card started dispute and called the store where I got the unit. General customer service of Boter's World called the store also. As a result, I got a call from store salesperson, who just yesterday told me: "We are not exchanging incomplete package" and offered to exchange within 3-4 days. :) <br />I guess a little push gets the job done.<br />Case closed.<br />Happy Boating and Fishing to ALL<br /><br />Thank you all !!! <br />Lenny.

Wait a moment here. Did you pick up the display unit and the pins just fell out on the ground? If that is they case then raise hell and get Garmin to fix it. But somehow I don't think that's the case, after all, you did manage to install this thing. Did you break the pins off? Because if you did, why on earth should anyone take the unit back or exchange it for you? Warrantys are there to take care of latent and patent defects, not things that are broken by the owner.<br /><br />Thom

Hey Thom,<br />"Did you pick up the display unit and the pins just fell out on the ground?"<br /><br />They did not just fall off. They were missing. It looked to me like they were never there This Garmin 240 unit is a nicely built fishfinder. Pins are steel and the plug is designed to only go into the connectors in one position. You can't even bend the pins, unless you hit it with something. <br />I only want to get what I think I am entitled to -exchange of the item. I didn't buy defectiv unit on Ebay and tried to return it to the store. I know I bought it from the store and store knows I bought it there. The unit is defective and I just didn't feel like taking a hit for $250 over someone who shares your opinion.<br /><br />You say: "Warrantys are there to take care of latent and patent defects, not things that are broken by the owner". <br />Not that $250 bucks hit will change my life style or take any food off of my table, but I did not break it and think I was lucky to notice a problem. <br />Would you take a chance and keep the unit with broken pins knowing it may not work properly?<br />If yes, I feel  for being so cheap and picky.<br /><br />More helpful posts like yours and I will start working towards changing my "customer is always right" opinion. I may soon start asking stors to buy only items that are broken and pay premium price too, just to make sure that noone thinks I am asking for too much.<br /> ;) <br />Best wishes, <br />Lenny

Re: Broken connector pin on Garmin 240 blue fish finder

ThomWV I think was way off base. If he knew anything about these units he would have known that, as Lenny stated, the connector only goes in one way, and unless you are truly careless or deliberate, you can't break off any of these pins as they are recessed into the connector. As most people would do I'm sure Lenny was extra careful with a brand new unit. I read Lenny's original post and realized (as many of you did I'm sure) that he was only wanting what any REASONABLE person would. And bravo to you Lenny for not giving up when you thought you were right. Long ago my father taught me that when you have a problem, you start with the appropriate person, and then you go all the way to the top if you need to to get satisfaction. Just keep your expectations reasonable and you will be taken care of, or the company should lose you as a customer. This society needs more people to stick by their guns, and not give up just because the doing right thing is to tough.

Next time they give you a ration of crap buy another unit and then return a broken but complete unit. Plus now you'll have a receipt.
