Ok here is one for you. as most of you know I have a 15032 Fastwin 18hp. Just picked it up last week. Hasnt been ran in 25+ years. Went through the power head and got it all ready to go. ran her a few times all seemed ok. today converted it to thw single fuel line system. ( thank you for all the help btw) looked at the gear oil (previous owner said he changed it just before I bought it) it was full of water and the gaskets were nowhere to be found on the drain plugs. I replaced those. added new gear oil. mounted it on my inflatable and test drove it. Got about 100 yards away and was just getting up to full speed. And the prop quit spinning. Paddled back into the slip and removed the motor. prop would spin freely in either gear. removed the prop and the drive pin fell out in three pieces. So here is my question.... why would it do this? seemed fine the two previous times i took it out this week. Now just snapped?

Re: Broken drive pin

You could have it something and didn't know it or it was previously broken. Try a new one and see what happens.

Re: Broken drive pin

Was it the correct drive pin (stainless steel)? Sometimes the just wear out after many shifts. Sometimes the brass hub in the prop seizes in the aluminum prop body (corrosion) and that means you lose the cushioning effect of the rubber hub. Sometimes the clutch dog is worn out and all the banging as it jumps in and out of gear will break the pin. Sometimes you just have bad luck.

Re: Broken drive pin

Appears to be nice and clean all around there. The prop has no dings in it. Thank you for the response. Yeah I am hoping it just was old and worn. I ordered 2 more online. But I found one locally too. Hopefully get it fixed tomorrow. I have been so excited to get this thing going. And now retro fitted with a fuel pump. And the pin is the only thing holding me up. One question tho. The shop here can only go back as far as 1968. Mine is a 1960. Different part numbers for the pin. Anyone know if they are the same? Here at the numbers. I cannot find any cross reference.

0307949 (1968). 0203663 (1960)

Re: Broken drive pin

In case anyone else is curious. Yes these pins are interchangeable

Well, maybe they are and maybe they aren't. Depends on what propeller you have on it. 203663 is 1-3/16 long, 307949 is 1-3/8 long. Obviously, a 1-3/8 won't fit in a slot made for 1-3/16. Going the other way, a short pin will fit in a long slot, but can slide back and forth, the short end providing little engagement with the prop. But it'll drive it.

The propellers are interchangeable if using the correct pins.
