Broken Lube oil line fitting

Alpha 1 Gen2 Mercruiser out drive, I broke the fitting for the lube oil line at the gimbal housing. Can I bypass the reservoir system and just check fluid level at the out drive vent plug like in the old days? That fitting is a real bear to get at inside the boat at the transom!

you can, just remove the dribble fitting in the gimbal housing and leave the hose to the res going to the res.

I'd replace the fitting. I know they are a bear to replace, done a fair amount of them. But I like to see what the oil is doing.

It can be a real pig to replace (depending on how easy you can access the fitting from the engine compartment). I know, I just this this a couple of weeks ago. Take a look at this thread, there is some real helpful info

most times the steering unit comes out and maybe the water inlet hose
