broken shift handle '72 20hp

The handle is gone, and it broke off at the shaft about 1/4" inside the housing. I'm assuming I'll have to remove the powerhead to get at it. Any advice? I'm sure once I remove the powerhead, removal and replacement will be self-evident. I'd just hate to find I didn't need to remove the powerhead!! Thanks.

You have to remove the powerhead. Disconnect the throttle, and shift linkage, fuel hose, and any wiring hooked to the lower case, such as kill switch, or electric start. None of this is really difficult.
