Broken Shift linkage at controls

Hey Everyone,

It appears I broke the shift cable (at the control side), my cable got pinched somehow at the engine where it goes into the housing, and I moved the throttle forward and it kind of grinded then was loose, I looked down at where the shift cable goes into the controls and I saw a silver piece with what looks like broken strands of wire moving in and out when I move the throttle, I believe this should be tight.

I'm guessing I dislodged whatever was inside... The throttle cable still actuates at the engine side though, it's just the shifter cable.

So what should I be expecting to replace? What should my angle of attack be? I've never taken apart the controls so I'd like to minimize as much as possible if I can.

Thanks everyone!

PS The motor is a 1978 140HP Rude 140843c

Re: Broken Shift linkage at controls

Be aware that controls fit multiple years of the motors. There are multiple cables available as seen here http://www.iboats.com/Johnson-Contr...8854118--session_id.277677228--view_id.243425

You need to take the old cable out to make sure you are ordering the correct one..... (yup, I did the same thing and ordered a cable the same year as the motor and as it turned out......my controls were from another year. Been there done that)

Thanks so much for the replies!
So do I need to order a full new cable? (From box to motor)Any parts in the cable housing I'll need?
Or just the cable?

Thanks again

The new cable will consist of the outer housing and the inner wire. You will need to order the cable assy of the proper lenth to go from the control box to the engine.
Bob VT is correct, you need to determine which cable type you have, there are different ends that will determine your cable.

Perfect thanks so much.

I'll take it out and see which end I need. And go from there.

Thanks again!
