head twisted of shift linkage bolt. the one that goes thru the coupling, and the shift rod, (2000 225 Johnson) easiest way to get it out?

First thing to do is take the port side lower cowl off so you can get to it to work on it; Four screws from starboard side and two clips inside.

Left hand bits starting with a small one and gradually increase. Heat from drilling will help with the corrosion that is probably binding the screw.

thanks, another verification of my thoughts. cleaning up previous work. guess what, heads broken on the starboard side also.

It is easier to just pull the port side cover and use a Dremel tool cutter or a chisel to split the aluminum clevis piece. Then remove the screw holding the clevis to the shaft and you are done.

A new clevis and screw and lockwasher assembled using marine grease will be fine for a long time.
