Help deperately needed. Took my boat out today (13' Boston Whaler with a 35hp Mercury (1986).

While cruising I heard a loud pop so I shut it down. Thought maybe I hit something underwater. Looked at prop, no damage so we head back to boat ramp (just in case).

Got to the dock and ready to load boat. Put in reverse and it went FORWARD. Tried the high idle, still went forward.

fast forward. Came home, linkage ok. Pulled lower unit and low and behold, the shift rod was broke. Bottom half of shift rod came out. Top is still connected in the powerhead housing.

Questions:

1) What would cause a shift rod to break like this?

2) How do I remove the top part of the shift rod (lots of obstructions) so I can replace the shift rod.

Thanks
