I have a 68 Johnson 40hp w/ "Johnson controls". The shifter cable is attached to a very tough plastic looking object about 4 inches long(pictured below). The cable goes through this piece and 2 screws anchor the cable into place. Anyways, it's broken and I tried to 'gorilla glue' it but no luck. I want a replacement.

Mine did the same thing, all you have to do is take it to a marine salvage to get a used one not a good idea though because they get brittle with age, I think you can still get them at dealers, i got three before i found one that didn't break. My 68 33hp evinrude has the same control. or you can find a later model single handle control they are easier to find parts for. Welcome to the forum

Picked up the part today...last one in stock. They had to bust out the micro fiche ...like the old days at the library to find the part #. Anyway, it was brand new, $7. Thanks for the help.
