I rented a boat last weekend and hit something under water which caused this damage to the skeg. The owner wants me to pay for an entire lower unit, when I believe the skeg can be repaired for cheaper. Please look at the pics and tell me if I have a case.

Re: broken skeg

That one is one of the worst I have seen. Looks like a full replacement from here.

Re: broken skeg

have to agree - that was a hard hit - i for one have welded skegs that have had an oopsy -but that requires disassembly of the lower unit ( gears/seals/bearings) and even after all that time and money theres no guarantee it wont need more parts/time and money ... do yourself a favour - buy him a new or even a quality rebuilt unit from someone you both agree on and thank me later ... i bet that hit thru the motor straight up ... a good rebuild will start at 600 u.s. or or ..hey would you look at that only 675 canadian today:D and personally i dont think you should even expect the rentee to want any less - some other family may rent that boat later - and not be so fortunate - most accidents at sea are caused by an engine failure ( no control -wave over the stern - get my point) . i'm not saying you were careless -accidents happen - but when its somebody elses equipment ,you replace it - i mean any boat owner knows they are expensive enough as it is and thats when we break'em.

I agree, not worth trying to weld it up. You might be able to just get the housing, and swap out the rest. MIght save a few bucks, but... if it was your motor, what would you accept? Surely not a patch up job...right?

Re: broken skeg

check eBay for 40hp Mercury outboard, if thats what you need. There's a 2000 2 cycle being parted out. Ends today or tomorrow. Cheap!
