broken slow speed idle adjustment needs fixed

Hi, I have a 95 Johnson 9.9 elec. start with a broken slow speed idle adjustment on the tiller handle. Can't seem to get the handle off when pressing the 2 small buttons in on the handle. I must have missed a step??????? advise

Turn that idle knob all the way in to release it, handle will slide over it and off
