I see this post a few threads down and I wanted to start my own thread for my own problem. I have a '95 Chaparral SST 19.5' with a 4.3L merc. I bought the boat at the beginning of last season. The boat was clean, all fluids clean, etc. It started right up in March and ran like a top during the test drive. It started first or second crank all last season, 15-20 uses with 10-12 starts per use. It was winterized by a reputable marine center. First time this year it went to turn over and for a couple revolutions and then a loud grinding noise. Long story short it is an issue with the "ear" where the starter mounts to the block. It appears to have been an issue before, because it seems there is some weld already in the area. I have attached some pictures.(let me know if they attached correctly)

I read about the fix with the all thread from another user and wanted to know if anyone has had the same success. Also, if you have, what parts and sizes did you use. It seems like a great fix for the season. All the shops I have talked to are busy with tune ups and oil changes, and dont really want to take on a project that required pulling the motor on a boat or welding cast. Any tips would be really helpful, as its supposed to be 90 degrees plus here in Richmond, VA this weekend and I am looking at my boat on the trailer.
Thanks,
Chris
