I bought a 1972 Johnson outboard with hydro matic steering about a month ago.Yesterday I had only left turns. The steering cable came loose where it exits the side of the boat about 2 ft from the motor. What is exposed are about 30 strands of wire that I imagine are there to stiffen the casing to survive bends.I can also see a spiral cable that I imagine actually controls the steering.I spent about 2 hrs yesterday tring to reinsert the 30 strands back in to what looks like a copper compression fitting. When I turn the wheel the spiral cable just expands out of the plastic casing.

I'm not sure what kind of steering this is(hydraulic?) or what to do.Is there a blowup I can look at,a repair kit, a source where I can find a replacement.

I am new to bioating and would appreciate any help.

Thanks jim

Re: BROKEN STEERING CABLE

JC43

Welcome!

Try the Teleflex website:

www.teleflexmarine.com

They manufacture a lot of the steering cables. You can replace just the steering cable. Most boat stores can source them. I would recommend that you do replace your cable as you would not want it to fail at a crucial time.
