Broken tab on retainer nut?!?

Only bad thing about DIY is in the process of fixing stuff you break other stuff

So I attempted to change out my bad u-joints with the method where you grind just enough off the corners on two of the ears of the retainer nut so the u-joint cap clears. It worked perfect except for the fact that i wasn't paying close enough attention to the center yoke between the two u-joints which was cocked to one side. As the u-joint pushed through the shaft the center yoke pushed into one of the retainer nut ears and snapped it off.

I understand the O-ring in the bell housing will not seal if I try to install the drive without repairing this. My questions are:

1. Can I simply purchase the proper wrench and new retainer nut, unscrew the broken one and install the new one at 200 ft lb torque?

2. Will I effect the upper drive bearings in anyway by removing and replacing this retainer nut?

3. should I just install the drive and go boating like it is? :)

Thanks

no

the rolling torque for the bearing pack is set before you install the assy and tourque the retainer

you will not need to disassemble the bearing/shaft assy to install a new retainer - just be sure to clean the outside thoroughly and re-install the shims

and remember, you set the torque on your wrench per the chart in the manual based on wrench length, not to 200 lb/ft
